During the PowerPlay, the Proteas rocked India as Marco Jansen took two wickets and captain Aiden Markram dismissed Ishan Kishan for a duck to leave the hosts on 31/3. Jansen’s second wicket — that of Abhishek Sharma — was especially clutch after Corbin Bosch and Keshav Maharaj got in a tangled mess while the latter caught a sky-high shot.

In the South African innings, Proteas batters David Miller and Dewald Brevis combined for a 93-run fourth-wicket partnership, powering South Africa to a defendable total at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The middle-order batters found themselves at the crease after the first four overs, as India had an excellent start, dismissing Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton early. Miller and Brevis had to rescue the side, build an innings and set a good foundation for the batters to come.

The duo played the role to perfection, as they put together 93 runs and transferred the pressure back to India’s bowling attack.

Miller smashed 63 off 35 balls, a knock that included three maximums and seven boundaries, while Brevis struck 45 off 29, hitting three sixes and three fours. To finish off the innings, Tristan Stubbs put together 44 off 24, smashing big blows at the back end of the innings to help the Proteas post 187/7.

South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first, sending opening batters Aiden Markram (4) and Quinton de Kock (6) to set the tone. However, it was India’s opening bowlers who landed the first blow, as Jasprit Bumrah clean-bowled De Kock to hand the co-hosts a crucial wicket.

Markram followed soon after, as he smashed a length ball from seamer Arshdeep Singh (2/28) straight to Shivam Dube at mid-off. Bumrah would strike one more time in the first powerplay, as he got the better of Ryan Rickelton (7), leaving the Proteas reeling on 20/3.
