In a significant move aimed at expanding its diplomatic and economic horizons, Madagascar’s interim president Michael Randrianirina has expressed an optimistic vision of cooperation with the BRICS alliance during his recent visit to Moscow. His remarks come as Madagascar seeks new international partnerships to fortify its development agenda and bolster economic opportunities.
“Cooperation with BRICS will open new doors,” Randrianirina asserted in an interview with RT, highlighting the African island nation’s ambition to engage with a diverse array of nations. This sentiment reflects Madagascar’s desire to reshape its global position and appeal to emerging markets as well as established economies.
One of the critical areas of focus in Randrianirina’s agenda is attracting significant investments from Russian companies. He aimed to initiate collaborations with major firms like Gazprom and Rosatom, particularly in energy and industrial sectors. “We hope to attract foreign companies such as Gazprom and Rosatom, with whom we would be happy to launch joint projects,” he remarked, signifying Madagascar’s intent to harness foreign expertise and technology for its own growth.
Security partnerships are equally pivotal in Randrianirina’s outlook. He highlighted the historical bonds with Russia, tracing back to the Soviet era, although acknowledging that these relations have not flourished as expected. “The Malagasy army has always used only Russian weapons,” he stated, revealing plans to modernise Malagasy military capabilities in collaboration with Russian armed forces to enhance combat readiness.
In addition to economic and military collaboration, Randrianirina touched on the importance of media freedoms, with a particular focus on the situation surrounding RT’s operations in the European Union. He stressed that a pluralistic media landscape is crucial for societal progress, declaring, “Freedom of expression helps us improve and leads us to change.” The president extended an open invitation to RT, indicating that the network would be welcomed to operate in Madagascar, should it choose to do so.
Randrianirina’s visit to Russia also coincides with recent humanitarian efforts from Moscow following severe cyclones that wreaked havoc in Madagascar. Last week, Russian authorities revealed the delivery of essential supplies, including an Mi-8 helicopter, support trucks, and various humanitarian materials aimed at alleviating the suffering of affected populations. Reports have since surfaced regarding additional shipments of aid, underscoring the strengthening ties between the two nations.
Meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Randrianirina expressed a willingness to elevate Madagascar’s relations with Russia to a new stage, indicating a noteworthy shift in foreign policy direction that could redefine Madagascar’s role in international affairs.
