Madlanga Commission resumes following Easter recess

The Madlanga Commission is set to resume its pivotal public hearings today following the Easter recess.

The Commission will be focusing this week on the allegations surrounding the Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD), a critical aspect of its broader investigation into systemic malfeasance within South Africa’s law enforcement framework.

The Commission continues its work leading up to a final deadline at the end of August 2026, it remains steadfast in its commitment to examining areas outlined in its terms of reference that have yet to be thoroughly explored.

The impetus for the Commission’s investigation was sparked by allegations made by Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi during a media conference in Durban on July 6, 2025.

While the Madlanga Commission will continue to welcome all information pertinent to its investigation, it is crucial to note that its mandate does not extend to exploring every claim of wrongdoing throughout the criminal justice system. Instead, it seeks to hone in on the specific allegations that threaten to undermine public confidence in law enforcement.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has recently announced the extension of the Commission’s term, signifying the government’s commitment to addressing corruption within the ranks of its justice operations. A second interim report is expected to be submitted to the President by 29 May, culminating in a comprehensive final report due by 31 August 2026.
