Luxury fashion designer Londeka Buthelezi-Ndaba has transformed Malondie into one of South Africa’s most sought-after contemporary fashion labels. But behind the polished silhouettes and growing success is a journey built on resilience, business acumen and an unwavering belief in her vision.

Ahead of unveiling Malondie’s Spring/Summer 2026 (SS26) collection during Women’s Month in partnership with Vaseline Cera Glow, Buthelezi-Ndaba sat down with IOL to reflect on the realities of building a fashion business, the childhood memory that ignited her love for design and why creativity alone is never enough to build a lasting brand.

While the upcoming collection promises an immersive luxury fashion experience celebrating beauty, confidence and self-expression, Buthelezi-Ndaba says the journey to this moment has been anything but easy.

“Behind every collection are countless decisions around business, resilience and perseverance. You quickly realise that success isn’t built overnight, and there are moments where you have to keep believing in your vision long before everyone else sees it,” she said.

For the designer, one of the biggest lessons has been recognising that fashion is as much about strategy as it is about creativity.

“As creatives, we often focus on making beautiful things, but I’ve learnt that protecting your work is just as important as creating it.”

She credits her legal background with helping her understand the importance of safeguarding original ideas in an industry where intellectual property is invaluable.

Those lessons also inspired her to pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

“I needed to understand the business of business. Having a beautiful product doesn’t guarantee sales. I had to learn how it moves from me to the Malondie woman.”

As Londeka Buthelezi-Ndaba, founder of Malondie, prepares to unveil her Spring/Summer 2026 collection, she shares her inspiring journey and the lessons learned along the way.

The outfit that sparked a lifelong passion

Long before she was dressing South African women in contemporary luxury designs, Buthelezi-Ndaba was captivated by the effortless elegance of her mother.

A primary school teacher, her mother would wear coordinated outfits every Thursday as part of the former NATU teachers’ dress code, a memory that remains etched in the designer’s mind.

“I still remember one particular morning so vividly. She walked out wearing sheer stockings, a short navy-blue dress and an oversized navy coat.

“I was very young, but I stood there completely in awe, thinking, ‘How can clothes be so perfect?'”

Looking back, Buthelezi-Ndaba realises it wasn’t just the clothing that fascinated her.

“My mother carried herself with such confidence, elegance and grace that she transformed every outfit into something unforgettable.

“That moment stayed with me. It taught me that fashion is not just about garments; it’s about the person who brings them to life.”

Designing confidence, not trends

That philosophy has become the foundation of Malondie.

While many brands chase seasonal trends, Buthelezi-Ndaba says discovering her signature aesthetic happened organically over time.

“It wasn’t something I decided overnight,” she explained.

“Over the years, I discovered that the common thread running through every collection wasn’t a particular silhouette or trend; it was how I wanted women to feel.

“Today, every Malondie collection is rooted in confidence, sophistication and purposeful storytelling. We create contemporary luxury that celebrates African heritage while remaining timeless.

“Once I understood that emotion would always come before trends, my design identity became much clearer.”

A collection inspired by modern African femininity

Those ideas come to life in Malondie’s SS26 collection, which explores the many dimensions of modern African femininity.

“It’s a woman who honours where she comes from while confidently creating her own future,” said Buthelezi-Ndaba.

“That duality inspired every aspect of the SS26 collection.”

Drawing inspiration from childhood memories of nature, the collection references the quiet glow of fireflies and the warmth of the morning sun as symbols of the quiet strength women carry every day.

“SS26 is very close to my heart, so it was only fitting to reveal it through a grand fashion experience that feels immersive and celebrates beauty, healthy skin, deep self-love and a community of like-minded women.”

As Londeka Buthelezi-Ndaba, founder of Malondie, prepares to unveil her Spring/Summer 2026 collection, she shares her inspiring journey and the lessons learned along the way.

A partnership rooted in confidence

The collection will be unveiled in collaboration with skincare brand Vaseline Cera Glow, a partnership Buthelezi-Ndaba says felt like a natural fit because both brands share a common purpose.

“The collaboration is rooted in one simple idea: the power of ‘she’; celebrating the strength and resilience of women while encouraging them to follow their glow.”

For her, fashion and skincare go hand in hand.

“Fashion and skincare might belong to different industries, but they both influence how a woman feels about herself. When you feel comfortable in your own skin and confident in what you’re wearing, that confidence naturally becomes part of how you move through the world.”

She believes confidence isn’t built through perfection, but through everyday acts of self-care.

“Skincare is one of those rituals. Fashion is another. Together, they become acts of self-respect rather than acts of perfection.

“Healthy skin is the first layer of every outfit. When your skin is glowing and thriving, it influences what you wear and how you feel in it.

“When you combine that with clothes you genuinely love, you have the confidence to command the room and show up as your full self.”

‘Protect your dream’

Asked what advice she would offer aspiring designers, Buthelezi-Ndaba’s message was simple: keep believing in yourself, even before the world does.

“Protect your dream, even when it feels too big for where you are today. Every established designer started with an idea that existed only on paper.

“Don’t allow your circumstances to convince you that your vision is too small or too impossible.”

She also encouraged young creatives to keep learning, refining their craft, and resisting the temptation to imitate others.

“Never lose your own perspective by trying to become someone else.

“This is what carrying your own light truly means. When we reveal the SS26 collection at the Malondie and Vaseline Cera Glow fashion experience, I want everyone to leave feeling like the world is their oyster.”
