Martin Vorster has a massive opportunity to change his life this weekend at LIV Golf UK, where he is guaranteed the biggest paycheque of his career.

Vorster was a late replacement for Louis Oosthuizen in the all-South African Southern Guards team.

The 24-year-old Sunshine Tour campaigner—whose biggest payday to date stands at R796,618—is guaranteed to earn at least $50,000 (approx. R844,000) even if he finishes last in the star-studded field.

However, after an opening round of level-par 72, Vorster found himself well placed in a tie for 31st.

Vorster’s Potential Earnings and Memorable Encounter with Bryson DeChambeau

If he maintains that position, he will earn at least $165,000 (R2.7m). A push into the top 20 guarantees minimum earnings of $240,000 (R4.04m), while sneaking into the top 10 would net him at least $405,000 (R6.8m).

Vorster stands to earn even more depending on where the Southern Guards finish in the team competition. After round one, the team sat in a tie for eighth. If they hold that position, each member will pocket an extra $125,000 (R2.1m).

As it stands, Vorster is projected to earn around R4.8m this weekend alone—surpassing his total career earnings of R4.5m on the Sunshine Tour.

No matter how the rest of the weekend unfolds, the prize money on offer is bound to alter the course of his career.

“It’s been amazing. The guys have made me feel incredibly welcome from the moment I arrived,” Vorster said ahead of the opening round.

Earlier in the week, he also shared a memorable encounter on the range with one of LIV Golf’s marquee stars, Bryson DeChambeau.

“I was just on the range doing my thing, and when I turned around, there was Bryson DeChambeau watching me hit balls,” he recalled.

“We introduced ourselves and he said it looked like I could hit it pretty far. I just laughed and told him, ‘I don’t think as far as you!'”
