ANC secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, has hailed the late Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan as a principled leader whose life embodied integrity, humility, and a tireless commitment to a democratic South Africa.

Speaking at Gordhan’s commemoration ceremony in Pretoria on Saturday, Mbalula praised the veteran politician for his role in fighting state capture, promoting ethical governance, and guiding the ANC through turbulent times.

“Comrade PG walked the talk. His conduct reminded us that serving the people with integrity is non-negotiable,” said Mbalula, addressing mourners on behalf of the ANC.

“He stood firm even when it was unpopular, and his legacy should guide the ANC’s renewal project, particularly in the face of corruption and service delivery failures.”

Gordhan, a stalwart of the liberation struggle and long-serving public servant, passed away earlier this week.

His memorial coincided with a special ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Ekurhuleni.

Despite the ANC’s glowing tribute, Gordhan’s legacy has not been without controversy.

Opposition parties, notably the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), have long criticised Gordhan as a defender of entrenched elite interests and an obstacle to radical economic transformation.

EFF leader Julius Malema frequently accused Gordhan of “representing white monopoly capital” and standing in the way of policies aimed at uplifting the poor majority.

Yet Mbalula remained resolute in his praise. “Even when we differed, it was never personal with Pravin. He put unity and principle above all else,” he said.
