Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso struggled to contain his frustration as he took aim at the match officials for “failing” to manage the Betway Premiership heavyweight clash against Kaizer Chiefs at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday night.
The encounter ended in a 1-1 draw, with Flavio da Silva opening the scoring for Chiefs in the 24th minute before Brayan Leon salvaged a point for the hosts in the 53rd minute.
The stalemate has significantly tilted the title race in favour of Chiefsโ arch-rivals, Orlando Pirates.
While Sundowns remain at the summit with 65 points, they sit just three points ahead of Pirates, who possess a game in hand. Should the Buccaneers defeat Magesi on Saturday, they will move to the top of the table on goal difference with only two fixtures remaining.
Chiefs remain in third place on 48 points but will view this as two points dropped, particularly as fourth-placed AmaZulu continue to apply pressure in the hunt for a top-three finish.
It was a bruising, physical affair that arguably should have seen both sides reduced to ten men. Ultimately, only Sundowns suffered that fate when Jayden Adams was shown a red card following a second yellow for simulation. Adams had earlier been booked for a heavy challenge that left Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala with a reported broken collarbone.
Chiefs, meanwhile, were fortunate that midfielder Siphesihle Ndlovu escaped a dismissal despite a performance characterized more by wrestling than footballing technicality.
A livid Cardoso did not hold back in his post-match assessment:
โIt is a concern and many things were happening. I still need to watch the highlights, but this is not how we want football to be played or officiated. There was a lot of kicking from both sides, and officials need to be better prepared; they need to do their homework. We must now win our remaining matches and see what happens.โ
Despite their numerical advantage, Chiefs failed to find a late winner as frequent stoppages stifled any attacking momentum. In the dying embers of the game, a crucial save from goalkeeper Brandon Petersen ensured Amakhosi held on for the point.
While the result strengthens Chiefs’ grip on third, its true significance lies in the title race, where the initiative has been firmly handed to Orlando Pirates ahead of their crucial weekend fixture. Referee Luxolo Badi certainly had a night to remember โ for all the wrong reasons.
