Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso believes Thato Sibiya has a major opportunity to accelerate his development with a move to French Ligue 1 side Lille.

The 20-year-old defender has emerged as one of South Africa’s most promising young talents after playing a key role in the national U20 side that won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations before featuring at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.

Sibiya was part of Sundowns’ first-team squad during their pre-season camp in Austria but is now set to continue his development in France.

Reports indicate that Sundowns have agreed a loan move with an option to buy, with Sibiya expected to join Lille.

Cardoso, who previously coached in France, believes the move presents an ideal environment for the youngster to develop, while acknowledging the level of competition he will encounter.

“Regarding Thato, it’s a fantastic opportunity,” Cardoso said on Monday.

“As you know, I coached in France, so I know very well the club he goes to, I know very well the facilities that they have, I know very well the stability in terms of the process of developing young players.”

The Portuguese coach also believes Sibiya is ready to embrace the challenge, but stressed that his development will continue long after he arrives in France.

“It’s also at the same time a very, very competitive environment that he’ll face. Obviously, I think he’s ready for the challenge,” he added.

“What will speak for him is not the level of readiness he takes, it’s the level of readiness he’s gonna still develop there.”

Sibiya will also have to adapt to the demands of French football, which Cardoso described as a particularly transitional and physically demanding environment.

“French football is very special, it’s a very flat football. He will have to cope with a lot of fast players, it’s a game of transition, a lot of exploitation of spaces,” he explained.

“In some moments it can be compared to our game, but Lille is a good school of football, a team that likes to play good football.”

While Sundowns could lose a promising player before he has established himself as a regular at Chloorkop, Cardoso believes the bigger picture must also be considered.

The coach sees Sibiya’s development as something that could eventually benefit both Sundowns and Bafana Bafana.

“As much as we believe he could be an important player for the future of Sundowns, we also know he will be an important player for the future of South Africa – that’s an opportunity it’s difficult to say no.”
