Miguel Cardoso’s future with Mamelodi Sundowns appears to be on rocky ground with the club reportedly holding talks with former head coach Pitso Mosimane.
Mosimane and Sundowns have had a frosty relationship since the former Bafana Bafana head coach left them in 2020 after winning the league title, but according to reports, the two parties have sat down to iron some issues and could be set for a reunion.
The news comes as Cardoso faces some scrutiny over how the current season has gone for the perennial kings of South African football. After 13 games, Sundown lie second in the Betway Premiership, two points behind Orlando Pirates who have a game in hand.
According to KickOff, Mosimane is seen as a potential candidate should the club decide to part ways with the Portuguese mentor.
The 61-year-old Mosimane was in charge of the Brazilians from 2012 to 2020, and guided them to five league titles, two Nedbank Cup wins, two Telkom Knockouts, a CAF Super Cup victory, and delivered the club’s first ever CAF Champion League win back in 2016.
After leaving Sundowns, Mosimane joined Egyptian giants Al Ahly, and went on to win two more CAF Champions League titles. After 2022, he’s had somewhat of a nomadic career, which has taken him to Saudi Arabia, UAE and Iran. He has been without a club since leaving Persian Gulf Pro League side Esteghlal in January of last year.
In many quarters, he is regarded as one of the greatest coaches on the African continent and is often one of the first names mentioned when South Africa’s biggest clubs have a coaching vacancy.
Appointing Mosimane would be a warning for title contenders Pirates, and a signal for Sundowns that they are willing to put up a fight to remain the top dogs of South Afircan football.
