Monnapule Saleng, the talented winger who was a surprise signing for Mamelodi Sundowns from Orlando Pirates during the January transfer window, is making steady progress in his recovery from injury.
Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso provided an encouraging update on Saleng, who will commence light training, raising hopes of an earlier return to the pitch. Two weeks ago, Cardoso expressed concern about Saleng’s injury, suggesting a lengthy absence might be necessary.
However, subsequent evaluations indicate that the 25-year-old’s recovery is progressing better than anticipated.
During a recent press conference, Cardoso shared: “If you remember, I spoke negatively about Saleng, saying we may probably have him out for the next two months. I also want to take some pressure away from his recovery and himself.”
Cardoso’s measured approach underlines the importance of a careful rehabilitation, noting that Saleng’s return to full training will depend heavily on his physical condition and fitness.
Cardoso emphasised the importance of the player’s well-being, stating: “We have to understand if he’s feeling well physically and fitness-wise.
“If he is capable of helping the team, he’ll play. We will make him understand a few details about what we want from him.”
As fans eagerly await his return, the prospect of Saleng being fit in time for a crucial clash against his former club, Orlando Pirates, later this month brings an air of excitement. However, it is more likely that he returns as early as March 1, when Sundowns face Sekhukhune United.
The PSL January transfer window has closed, with Saleng’s move to Sundowns headlining all confirmed signings. Saleng joined fellow newcomers Brayan Leon (Independiente Medellín, Colombia), Khulumani Ndamane (TS Galaxy) and Jody Ah Shene (Cape Town City).
Pirates have not been as prolific and have added Mpho Chabatsane, Daniel Msendami (both Marumo Gallants) and Andre De Jong (Stellenbosch FC). The other “Big Three” member, Kaizer Chiefs, have barely turned to the market, adding only Xhosa Manyana (Cape Town City) to their roster.
