Ngidi’s hat-trick and Hope’s hundred inspire Pretoria Capitals’ bounce-back win

Shai Hope’s maiden SA20 century, paired with sparkling three-wicket hauls from Gideon Peters and Lungi Ngidi, led the Pretoria Capitals to a 15-run victory over Durban’s Super Giants at Kingsmead in Durban on Wednesday.

Following their embarrassing 10-wicket loss at home to the Sunrisers Eastern Cape on Monday, the Pretoria Capitals bounced back emphatically. West Indies international Hope stood tall at Kingsmead, striking nine maximums and as many boundaries to help the visitors reach a mammoth 201/4. Hope finished unbeaten on 118 off only 69 deliveries, striking at a rate of 171.

Youngster Connor Esterhuizen picked up where he left off on Monday, putting together a 101-run partnership for the opening stand with Hope.

The 24-year-old struck 37 off 28 balls, a knock which saw him blast a monstrous six and four boundaries as they put the home team’s bowling unit to the sword. David Wiese (1/34), Gerald Coetzee (1/43), and Kwena Maphaka (1/45) finished as the pick of the bowlers for Durban’s Super Giants.

With the ball, fast bowlers Ngidi and Peters starred for the Capitals, drying out the runs and picking up wickets at regular intervals. Ngidi (3/39) registered a hat-trick in his fourth and final over, taking the wickets of Wiese (8), Sunil Narine (0), and Coetzee (0) in consecutive deliveries to break the Super Giants’ momentum.

Peters also had a day to remember in Durban, registering figures of 3/35 in his allotted four overs. The 26-year-old produced one of his fastest spells at Kingsmead, despite having seen very little game time for the Warriors this season.

While wickets fell at one end, Jos Buttler refused to roll over, striking a magnificent unbeaten 97 off 52 balls, including five maximums and nine boundaries. Buttler took the Super Giants to 186 all out to conclude what was a thrilling encounter in Durban.
