American actress Nia Long has officially cemented her place in Hollywood history after receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The actress was honoured on Wednesday, September 16, in the Motion Pictures category, becoming the recipient of the landmark’s 2,857th star.

The ceremony took place on Hollywood Boulevard, where Long was joined by family, friends and several of her famous colleagues, including rapper Snoop Dogg and “Michael” producer Graham King, who were guest speakers.

A career spanning film and television

Long’s career began in the early 1990s, with her role as Brandi in John Singleton’s acclaimed 1991 film “Boyz n the Hood” helping introduce her to a wider audience.

She went on to become a familiar face across both film and television, appearing in “Friday”, “Love Jones”, “The Best Man” and “Made in America”. Her television credits include “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”, “Third Watch” and  “NCIS: Los Angeles”.

For many fans, however, Long’s appeal has never been limited to one defining role. From romantic dramas to comedies and long-running television series, she has built a career around characters that have remained part of popular culture for decades.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce described her as an award-winning actress whose work has connected with audiences across generations.

“Nia is such a beloved and talented actress, and we’re so excited to celebrate her incredible career with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame,” said Ana Martinez, the Walk of Fame producer.

Snoop Dogg celebrates Nia Long

Snoop Dogg, who has a longstanding friendship with Long, used his speech to reflect on the actress’s ability to remain true to herself throughout her career.

“Hollywood has a way of trying to change you, trying to tell you how to look, tell you how to talk, tell you who you’re supposed to be, and sometimes even tell you when your time is up,” he said.

“But Nia? She said, ‘nah, I’m going to be Nia.’”

The rapper also appeared to embrace the occasion in his own way, wearing a jacket featuring Long’s face.

King, meanwhile, spoke about casting Long as Katherine Jackson in the Michael Jackson biopic “Michael”. He said the role required an actress who could convey “quiet strength, courage, dignity” and the person who held the Jackson family together.

Long ultimately took on the role of the Jackson family matriarch in the film, which was directed by Antoine Fuqua.

‘The nucleus of this star’

In her acceptance speech, Long reflected on the people and experiences that had shaped her journey.

According to Essence, she gave meaning to the different points of her star, dedicating them to God, her mother, her two sons, Massai and Kez, and loved ones who had passed away, including her grandparents, father and Singleton.

She also acknowledged the women who had supported her throughout her life.

“The nucleus of this star is a force who once doubted herself,” Long said.

“A girl from Brooklyn with Caribbean roots who doesn’t suffer fools and expects transparency from everyone that loves her.”

Long’s mother, Talita Long, and her sons were among those present for the ceremony, making the milestone a family affair.

The actress, who has also received four NAACP Awards, ended her speech by reflecting on the woman behind the career.

“She has never followed the crowd and would rather take the scenic route to success,” she said. “She is me, Nia Talita Long.”

What’s next for Nia Long?

The Walk of Fame honour arrives during another busy chapter in Long’s career.

She recently starred in “Michael”, portraying Katherine Jackson, and has reunited with her “Love Jones” co-star Larenz Tate for Netflix’s upcoming romantic drama “Don’t Ever Wonder”. Long also serves as an executive producer on the project.

She is also set to publish a memoir, while another reunion with Ice Cube is in development through “Are They Gone Yet?”, following their work together in “Are We There Yet?” and “Are We Done Yet?”.

For an actress whose work has been part of the soundtrack of so many viewers’ lives, the star on Hollywood Boulevard marks a public celebration of a career that has continued to evolve without losing its identity.
