The National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) has clarifed reports surrounding arrest warrants issued for senior South African Police Service (SAPS) officers, dismissing claims that multiple officers were facing imminent arrest.
In a statement issued on Friday, IDAC said media and social media reports that emerged following its statement on Thursday contained inaccurate and speculative information.
According to the directorate, warrants of arrest were issued only for Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo and Major General Nosipho Madondo.
“The IDAC can confirm that warrants of arrest were issued against General Dumisani Khumalo and Major General Nosipho Madondo only and no one else from the SAPS,” the directorate said.
IDAC explained that investigators had contacted the two officers and instructed them to present themselves at the Brooklyn Police Station on June 18.
However, before the warrants could be executed, the directorate received information indicating that both officers were part of a Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster team involved in preparations for a national security operation linked to immigration matters scheduled for June 30.
IDAC said it subsequently decided to suspend the execution of the warrants to avoid disrupting the work of the security team.
“In the interest of ensuring synergy and efficiency in the work of that team, IDAC thus decided to suspend the execution of the warrants of arrest until the assignment of the two officers is completed,” the statement read.
The two officers were then informed that they no longer needed to hand themselves over at the Brooklyn Police Station.
The directorate stressed that reports suggesting other SAPS members were facing arrest were false.
“Any unrelated information circulated about the arrest of other officers apart from the two is false and should be treated as such,” IDAC said.
The NPA has not disclosed the nature of the allegations underlying the warrants, nor has it indicated when the warrants will be executed following the completion of the officers’ assignment.
