Defending Betway Premiership champions Orlando Pirates will begin their quest to retain the league title when they host newly promoted Milford FC at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
The Buccaneers enter the new campaign carrying the weight of expectation after ending a 14-year wait for the league title last season, with head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou now tasked with ensuring last term’s success becomes the foundation rather than the peak.
Although Pirates’ pre-season campaign produced mixed results, the Moroccan has consistently stressed the importance of building on the standards set during the club’s title-winning campaign rather than dwelling on friendly results.
The Soweto giants have also entered the season with a refreshed look following the departure of Relebohile Mofokeng to Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise. Ouaddou, however, believes replacing the reigning PSL Footballer of the Season will be a collective responsibility, whilst the arrival of Norwegian striker Sebastian Pedersen, who has earned the nickname the “Baby Haaland” from South African fans, is expected to provide the clinical edge Pirates occasionally lacked despite creating more chances than any other team on the continent last season.
Captain Nkosinathi Sibisi has also thrown down an early challenge to his team-mates, urging them to turn Orlando Stadium into a fortress once again if they are to successfully defend their title.
Pirates will once again look to the likes of Oswin Appollis, Tshepang Moremi, and goalkeeper Sipho Chaine to lead from the front as they seek the perfect start to another demanding campaign that includes domestic and continental ambitions.
Much of Pirates’ attacking threat is expected to come through Appollis. The Bafana Bafana winger possesses the pace, creativity, and directness to trouble any defence, making him one of the league’s standout attacking players. Milford’s backline will therefore face an immediate examination as they look to contain one of South African football’s most dangerous forwards.
For Milford, meanwhile, Saturday marks the biggest occasion in the club’s history. After earning promotion to the Premiership, the KwaZulu-Natal outfit will make their long-awaited top-flight debut hoping to spoil the champions’ celebrations.
Head coach Xanti Pupuma has guided the club into uncharted territory and is expected to adopt a disciplined and compact approach against a Pirates side likely to dominate possession. Milford’s ability to remain organised defensively while looking to exploit counter-attacking opportunities could determine whether they leave Soweto with a memorable result.
