The South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating allegations of an apparent hit reportedly targeting controversial businessman and political fixer Brown Mogotsi in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg.
Unconfirmed reports circulating on social media allege that Mogotsi was travelling in a vehicle that came under fire in Vosloorus Extension 25. The vehicle is said to have been struck by more than eight bullets. The condition of Mogotsi and the driver is not yet known.
In a brief message to members of the media on Tuesday morning, SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said she was en route to Vosloorus police station in Gauteng to verify the reports.
“I’m heading to Vosloorus SAPS to ascertain reports about Brown Mogotsi,” Mathe said.
Police have not yet confirmed if there was indeed an attempt on Mogotsi’s life, any injuries, fatalities, or arrests linked to the alleged attack.
Who is Brown Mogotsi?
Mogotsi, a businessman from the North West province, has recently been the subject of several high-profile investigations.
In October, IOL reported that police raided his business premises in Seweding village near Mahikeng as part of an ongoing probe into alleged corruption and political interference. Mogotsi has previously described himself as a businessman and ANC volunteer.
He has been named in testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is probing alleged political interference in the criminal-justice system. Witnesses have linked him to controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, alleging that Mogotsi may have facilitated payments to political figures and shared sensitive police information — claims he has not publicly responded to in detail.
After the October raid, Mogotsi told media he feared for his life, citing what he called “targeted harassment” by law-enforcement officials.
