President Cyril Ramaphosa has indicated he is prepared to consider extending the Madlanga Commission’s deadline if commissioners conclude they need more time to complete their work, as mounting setbacks threaten the inquiry’s timetable.
Speaking to journalists on Monday during the Chris Hani Regional Volunteers Launch at Qamata Great Place in Cofimvaba, Ramaphosa praised the commission’s progress while leaving the door open for a possible extension.
“I am very pleased with the work that is being done with the Madlanga Commission. It may well be that they need a little bit more time and I’ll listen to that request if it comes,” he said.
The commission is working under intense pressure to conclude public hearings by July 31, while Ramaphosa has already extended its overall mandate, with the final report due by August 31.
Despite that extension, the inquiry continues to grapple with an ambitious scope of work, logistical challenges and health-related disruptions that have complicated its schedule.
Several key witnesses have also failed to appear as planned, further slowing proceedings.
Alleged cartel boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala‘s subpoenaed testimony was postponed amid heightened public interest and ongoing plea negotiations with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
Meanwhile, Deputy Crime Intelligence head, Maj-Gen. Feroz Khan, remains unavailable after being hospitalised following a shooting in Johannesburg last month.
North West businessman Suliman Carrim has also missed two scheduled appearances before the commission.
The growing list of delays has intensified scrutiny over whether the commission can complete its work within the existing timeframe or whether additional time will ultimately be required.
