Sekhukhune United will be hoping to extend their lead at the top of the Betway Premiership on Saturday, while Mamelodi Sundowns will be hoping to make a a statement after their loss in midweek.

With champions Sundowns hunting their ninth league title in a row, it’s been a bit of a strange start to their campaign.

Three draws and a loss in their opening nine games have raised a few eyebrows, but there’s still no reason to suggest they are not still heavy favourites to continue their domination of South African football this season.

That said, Sundowns come into this weekend off their 1-0 loss to hosts Golden Arrows on Heritage Day. It means when they welcome Richards Bay on Saturday, it will be about making a statement – but even more importantly claiming all three points at Lucas Moripe Stadium. Kick-off is at 8pm.

Sekhukhune and Sundowns Battle for PSL Top Spot as Orlando Pirates Eye Comeback

Sundowns are on 18 points after nine games for second spot in the league, with Sekhukhune on 20 points after eight matches.

Earlier on Saturday, Sekhukhune will take on Polokwane City at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium at 3pm. If Sekhukhune win, and Sundowns lose, it could mean a five-point gap at the top.

However, one team that will simply be hoping to keep in touching distance of the top will be Orlando Pirates.

Having already lifted a trophy this season with their MTN8 title under new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, there will be renewed desire to try and win their first league triumph since the 2011/2012 season.

Though Pirates are down in fifth on the table, they have played just six matches. However, they have lost twice in those six along with their four wins for their 12-point tally.

Standing in their way on Saturday will be fourth-placed TS Galaxy at Orlando Stadium. This match will also be a 3pm kick-off.
