The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has confirmed a probe has been launched following claims that a fake matric school is being run at its premises.

This comes after hundreds of learners arrived to write their National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations earlier this week were not issued with legitimate examination numbers.

According to Democratic Alliance spokesperson on Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Sakhile Mngadi, the institute, known as ‘Matric Scholars’ is not on the Department of Education’s database.

He said Matric Scholars, allegedly operated by Nombuso Mtshali at the DUT premises, is believed to have received over R8,000 from each learner, thinking they were due to write their NSC exams.

Mngadi is calling for a full investigation into the matter.

“We also call for urgent action by the DoE to assist all affected learners by placing them at recognised special matric centres, and for DUT to investigate how an unregistered institution was allowed to operate within its facilities.

“DUT must account for the apparent failure of oversight that lent legitimacy to a fraudulent operation,” Mngadi said.

In response to the allegations, DUT said it is aware of the concerns raised in relation to an entity known as “Matric Scholars.”

“The University is currently investigating this matter and will provide factual responses to the queries that have been raised,” it added.
