Proteas fast bowler Lungi Ngidi has been discharged from hospital after suffering a head injury during an IPL match on Saturday evening.
Playing for Delhi Capitals, Ngidi (30), misjudged a high ball coming his way, and whilst backpedalling, he tripped before landing heavily whilst hitting his head on the ground.
Spectators inside the Arun Jaitley Stadium, and millions on television, looked on in shock as Ngidi was attended to by the Capitals’ physio and team doctor who had rushed onto the field and.
He stayed on the ground for more than a minute as medical staff checked him before being
stretchered off into an ambulance and taken to the hospital.
An IPL statement read that Ngidi “complained of a headache and neck pain but was stable”.
According to reports from India, the Delhi Police took swift action to transport Ngidi in just 11 minutes to the hospital from the Capitals’ home ground.
“As soon as Delhi Police got information that a player, Lungi Ngidi, was injured, we spoke to the control room, created a green corridor and cleared the way for BL Kapoor,” said DCP Traffic Office Nishant Gupta.
“When we came to know that the ambulance drivers did not know the route of BL Kapoor, ACP Traffic Central District Sanjay Singh took the lead and guided the ambulance, covering a distance of nine kilometres in just eleven minutes,’ he said.
All-rounder Vipraj Nigam was brought in as a concussion substitute in a match Delhi ultimately lost with Punjab Kings chasing down a record 264.
The Capitals do have Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc on the verge of returning to the IPL should Ngidi not be able to return to play.
