Province in control at Newlands; No play at Bullring

Boland trail by 434 runs with seven wickets remaining

WESTERN Province captain, Kyle Verreynne, led from the front on Day Two of their penultimate Cricket South Africa Four-Day fixture against Boland Park at Newlands in Cape Town on Friday, bringing up his 14th First-Class century to help the hosts post a mammoth 592 runs in the first innings.

Verreynne, resuming on 61 on Friday, smashed his way to 131 off 215 deliveries, a knock which saw the right-handed batter strike 16 fours to give Province total control.

His partner, David Bedingham (68), added only four runs to his overnight score, facing only 13 deliveries before he was undone by the experienced leg spinner Shaun von Berg.

Spin-bowling all-rounder George Linde walked to the crease, joining his captain Verreynne, and the pair put on 127 runs for the fifth wicket, with Linde scoring 91 off just 66 deliveries.

The left-handed batter smashed seven sixes and six fours in his time at the crease as he helped the hosts cross the 500 run mark.

Having reached his 14th century, Verreynne declared the innings, finishing unbeaten on 131 and sent in the tired Boland line-up to bat just before the end of the second session.

In reply, Boland had the worst of starts with the bat, with opener Grant Roelofsen losing his wicket in the first over the innings.

Von Berg was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 6/126 as he claimed his 29th five-wicket haul in the process.

Province seamer Dane Paterson’s fifth stump got the better of Roelofsen (0) as it induced an outside edge with Verreynne hanging on to a simple catch behind the stumps.

Gavin Kaplan (9) was the next man out, losing his wicket in similar fashion to the bowling of Jody Lawrence with Verreynne once again the man with the safe hands.

When Aviwe Mgijima (27) was undone by Mihlali Mpomgwana, Boland captain Clyde Fortuin joined opener Pieter Malan at the crease and the pair remained resolute taking the visitors to stumps unscathed.

Malan finished unbeaten on 66 while Fortuin scored 55 as the pair put together a century stand.

The visitors will begin day three 433 runs behind.
