Rand Water has announced that its Eikenhof pumping station is now operating at full capacity following a weekend power outage that severely affected water supplies across several parts of Johannesburg.

The outage, which began late on Saturday, September 6, 2025, left many residents in areas such as Randburg, Soweto, and central Johannesburg grappling with reduced water pressure and, in some cases, complete outages by Sunday morning.

Water supply issues were exacerbated by sweltering temperatures, prompting a flurry of complaints on social media, with residents expressing frustration at the recurrence of water shortages.

Spokesperson for Johannesburg Water, Nombuso Shabalala, emphasised that while the Eikenhof station is back online as of Monday, the recovery of water distribution systems and reservoirs remains a gradual process.

Shabalala confirmed that several systems continue to be impacted, including the commando system, Waterval tower, Quellerina tower, Crown Gardens reservoir, Eagles Nest reservoir, and Naturena reservoir.

To mitigate the crisis, Johannesburg Water deployed water tankers to high-priority areas such as hospitals, schools, and vulnerable communities, while also urging residents to conserve water during this recovery phase.

As of now, the daily system status report from Johannesburg Water indicates constrained inflows but hints at gradual improvements. “We have noted improved inflows, but the system remains constrained,” added Shabalala

Residents of Randburg, particularly in suburbs such as Ferndale, Fontainebleau, and Kensington B, reported intermittent supply, with some taps remaining dry since Sunday evening.
