Nigerian actor Alexx Ekubo has died, reportedly after a long battle with cancer.

According to reports, the award-winning actor was in a hospital in Lagos when he passed away. He was 40 years old.

Ekubo was best known for his roles in the “Weekend Getaway”, “Hire a Woman”, and “Áfàméfùnà: An Nwa Boi Story” on Netflix. He also starred in the music video titled “Johnny” by Yemi Alade in 2013.

Netflix Nigeria paid tribute to the actor in a post on social media. “Alexx Ekubo brought intensity and heart to every role. Sending love and strength to everyone grieving this painful loss. Rest in power, Ikuku!”

Prominent comedian and producer Ayodeji Richard Makun publicly mourned the 40-year-old actor, sharing tributes and memories of his “final moments”.

“Some losses do not feel real, no matter how many times you try to process them. Still struggling with the reality that you are gone, Alex. From the laughter to the conversations, the random moments, the brotherhood, and all the memories we shared in this industry… this one hurts deeply,” he wrote.

“I was there. I saw you still smiling even in death. I saw the tears from friends and family. And honestly, a part of me is still in shock. Rest well, my brother. You will be remembered beyond the lights, the cameras, and the fame.”

Actress Idia Aisien remembered Ekubo for being there for her at so many of her lowest points.

“You were always the kindest soul; able to be there for everyone and lend your wisdom— I always joked that you’re at least an 80 year-old living in a young man’s body…Life is so cruel…May God please comfort your whole family…this really really hurts..Sleep well my friend and love always,” she wrote.

The Nollywood star made his acting debut in the 2005 production, “Sinners in the House”. He graduated with a degree in law from the University of Calabar and broke into stardom in 2010 after competing in the Mr Nigeria competition.

In 2013, he won Best Supporting Actor in the Best of Nollywood Awards for his role as Andre Dikeh in “Weekend Getaway”.
