Remembering Mandla ‘Njinji’ Magwaza: a giant of South African radio

It’s true what they say – a voice can leave a mark that lasts long after it falls silent.

Over the weekend, news came that broadcaster Mandla “Njinji” Magwaza had passed away after a short illness. 

His family confirmed the loss and asked for privacy as they make arrangements and grieve. They said that they are deeply saddened by the passing of their son, brother, father, husband and family member.

The family thanked everyone who had offered support and condolences and said that details about the memorial and funeral plans would be shared in due course.

Magwaza was born on December 8, 1984. He became one of the most recognised voices on South African radio, particularly through his work at Ukhozi FM.

He started his career in media in 2005 at Durban Youth Radio, hosting weekend night shows and later daytime programmes. Over time, he gained technical and on-air skills that helped him grow into larger roles.  

In 2008, he joined Ukhozi FM as a technical producer, working on major programmes including the breakfast show “Vuka Mzansi”. Over more than a decade at the station, he moved from behind the scenes into more visible roles and became a familiar voice to millions of listeners across Mzansi.

I met Magwaza on three occasions at the Ukhozi FM studios in Durban. I was hosted on his music shows, and he was always welcoming. The Njinji that I knew was always bubbly and serious about his work. His voice was strong and distinct.

Even without seeing him, you knew that he was around. Listening to his shows was exciting. He brought energy to every programme, and it felt as though he treated each broadcast with care and attention.

He loved to laugh and to share stories. He filled his time on the radio with warmth and energy, and that connection with the audience is one of the things many people will remember.

His voice was bold and clear, and it helped shape evening and weekend routines for many families and young people.

After more than ten years at Ukhozi FM, he resigned in late 2024. At that time, he was hosting the Ukhozi FM Top 30 on Saturdays from midday to the afternoon. He had also worked on crossover shows and special music features alongside other presenters.

Magwaza’s career extended beyond radio as he moved into television.

He co-hosted a music talent show on SABC1 called “uShuni Womhlaba”, bringing him to a new national audience and demonstrating his ability to connect with viewers as well as listeners.

Listeners and colleagues have shared tributes since the news of his passing. Many recalled his passion for radio and his ability to make listeners feel part of the experience.

His connection to music, youth culture and the community stood out in his work and in the way people responded to him. 

In addition to his broadcasting roles, he mentored young people, supported community work and partnered with brands. This expanded his influence beyond any single show.
