Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach, Rhulani Mokwena, has been released following his arrest in Algeria.

IOL previously reported that Mokwena, 39, was reportedly held after customs officials stopped him at Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers amid allegations that he was attempting to leave the country with undeclared foreign currency, which would be a breach of Algeria’s strict currency regulations.

In a statement on X, Head of Public Diplomacy at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) Clayson Monyela, said Mokwena had been cleared to leave Algeria.

Monyela said Mokwena was taken to a hotel and a team from Dirco will further assist to ensure that Mokwena’s trip is facilitated without hiccups.

As per reports, he was given a R6,500 fine and a suspended sentence.

Mokwena had recently left his position as head coach of Algerian side MC Alger after eight months in charge.
