Richard Edward Foxton, a veteran public relations executive and husband of former Public Protector Professor Thuli Madonsela, has died at the age of 82.
Fondly known to those close to him as Dick or “Mr Foxton,” he is said to have passed away peacefully in his sleep, according to the Thuli Madonsela Foundation.
Foxton was a respected figure in the field of corporate communications and public relations, with a career spanning several decades.
His work, though often behind the scenes, shaped the public image of numerous high-profile organisations in South Africa and abroad.
He was known for his calm demeanour, strategic thinking, and dedication to ethical practice in media and stakeholder engagement.
“He was a proud father and a loving grandfather to nine grandchildren, all of whom were a central part of his life. His life partner, Madonsela, was his steadfast companion in personal and professional matters, and together they were a symbol of mutual respect, love and integrity,” read the statement.
He met Professor Madonsela during the early years of her career, and the two shared a quiet, enduring partnership throughout her rise to national prominence.
While Madonsela became one of South Africa’s most respected constitutional figures, serving as Public Protector from 2009 to 2016, Foxton remained a steadfast source of private support and counsel, often described as her “rock.”
Friends and colleagues remember him not only for his professional excellence but for his wit, humility, and commitment to justice and service. He is survived by Professor Madonsela, their children, and grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled to take place at the Rosebank Catholic Church on Friday at 2pm, accompanied by an honour of his life at the Bryanston Country Club.
