Richards Bay United co-coach Papi Zothwane insists their recent upturn in form is a result of steady progress rather than fortune. The Rich Boyz secured a 2-1 win over Stellenbosch on Tuesday night, turning the tide on their losing streak in the process.
Following the morale-boosting victory, Zothwane was quick to shut down any suggestion that the result came down to luck. Instead, the mentor pointed to improved structure, discipline, and a better understanding among his players as the key drivers behind the performance.
Richards Bay have endured an inconsistent campaign in the Betway Premiership, often struggling to maintain momentum. However, their latest showing suggested a side beginning to find its identity at a crucial stage of the season.
Zothwane highlighted how lessons from previous defeats, particularly against stronger opposition, have played a significant role in shaping the team’s recent displays. According to the coach, the squad have worked hard to correct tactical lapses and improve decision-making in key moments — something that was evident in their composed display against Stellenbosch.
“There is growth in the team,” Zothwane said, stressing that performances like these are built on consistent effort on the training ground rather than isolated moments of brilliance.

He suggested that if Richards Bay can replicate their recent performance levels, they have the capability to compete with any side in the league. However, consistency remains the biggest hurdle. Zothwane’s message was clear — Richards Bay are no longer relying on fortune.
His team have seven games in hand to back up his words and push towards a top 10 finish. If they are lucky, they could also make the Top 8.
