Rock Lobster population now at 1% of its pristine levels
The Department of Environment, Fisheries and Forestry says it has no choice but to cut fishing allocations for rock lobsters. The rock lobster population is now at one-percent of its pristine levels. Small-scale fishers have complained that the 16-percent reduction in Total Allowable Catch hurts their businesses. The department says factors that include overfishing, climate change, and poaching have led to the decline in the rock lobster population.
