Sean Fitzpatrick believes the greatest legacy Rassie Erasmus has built with the Springboks is the sheer depth in South African rugby.
“Well, back-to-back World Cups is pretty good. But what he’s really done is create a fiercely competitive environment—you can hear the guys upstairs talking about that,” said the All Black legend.
Under Erasmus, the Springboks captured both the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cup titles. Looking ahead to the next showpiece, South Africa once again find themselves among the heavy favourites to retain the Webb Ellis Cup.
Standing in their way, however, will be their ultimate rivals: the All Blacks, who previously achieved the back-to-back feat in 2011 and 2015.
Fitzpatrick Praises Erasmus’ Squad Depth as Springboks Mirror 2015 All Blacks
Fitzpatrick explained why Erasmus has been so successful in guiding South Africa to consecutive World Cup triumphs:
“When I look at one of our greatest World Cup-winning teams—the 2015 squad that beat Australia in the final—we could have essentially fielded 15 other players in those exact positions and still been odds-on favourites. That level of squad depth is something Rassie has done amazingly well.”
Drawing a comparison between the current Springbok setup and the 2015 All Blacks is a massive compliment, as that New Zealand team is widely regarded as one of the greatest sides in rugby history.
Meanwhile, the All Blacks are navigating a transition period of their own following the appointment of Dave Rennie as head coach.
“Obviously, that’s the main challenge for Dave Rennie—creating that same fierce competition,” Fitzpatrick noted. “Having multiple players pushing each other in positions that are thoroughly contested, regardless of the weekly result.”
The dominance of Southern Hemisphere powerhouses remains a defining feature of the sport. Since England’s victory in 2003, New Zealand and South Africa have swept every World Cup title between them. Even with Ireland’s dramatic rise as a global power in recent years, the Irish have famously yet to progress beyond the quarter-final stage of the tournament.
