Eric Tinkler, Sekhukhune’s coach, said the team was recovering from a tense encounter against TS Galaxy on Wednesday night at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
Following a long journey back home that concluded at 3am on Thursday, the team’s focus has swiftly shifted to a much more critical MTN8 matchup.
Tinkler expressed cautious optimism, saying: “The MTN8 semi-final against Stellenbosch is a massive, massive game. They have been a very, very good team over the past two seasons, surprising many with their performances and league finishes.”
His recognition of Stellenbosch’s competitive prowess sets the stage for a thrilling match, as both teams vie for a spot in the coveted MTN8 final.
Tinkler’s record (as a head coach) against Stellenbosch has been less than stellar, and he voiced his hopes not only to change his fortunes but also to shift Sekhukhune’s trajectory dramatically.
“Hopefully, we can go there and not only change my fortune against them. We hope it changes Sekhukhune’s fortunes in terms of trying to reach the MTN8 final,” he remarked. However, he is fully aware that this will be no easy task.
“It is not going to be easy,” Tinkler admitted, acknowledging the challenges posed by the Danie Craven Stadium.
“They are a very, very difficult team to play, especially at home. They enjoy strong support, making their games at Danie Craven a different experience than their outings at Athlone or the DHL Stadium in Green Point.”
Stellenbosch’s tactical approach, predominantly built on counter-attacks, is designed to exploit opponent mistakes, a challenge that Tinkler knows will require top-notch performance from his squad.
“We know it’s not going to be very easy. We are going to have to be at our best come Saturday.”
