Sharks’ silence over Bongi Mbonambi raises more questions than answers

The Sharks’ silence over Bongi Mbonambi’s alleged disciplinary indiscretions during a team-building excursion and his unexplained absence, despite being fit to play, raises questions about how the Durban franchise has handled the situation.

While the matter may be dealt with internally, the repeated refusal to provide clarity when asked on separate occasions on his availibility does little to reassure supporters who want to know what is happening with one of the squad’s most experienced players.

Yes, the Sharks are under no obligation to disclose every detail, particularly if disciplinary proceedings are still under way. However, there must be a way to communicate the situation without compromising the process or those involved. A simple explanation of where matters stand would go a long way towards putting speculation to bed.

Instead, the silence since last week left more questions than answers until details of the alleged disciplinary breaches emerged in the media on Sunday following their United Rugby Championship (URC) loss to the Stormers.

Mbonambi is not just another player on the Sharks’ books.

The double Rugby World Cup winner has been integral to the Springboks’ success over the years and remains one of the most experienced hookers in South African rugby. Naturally, supporters want to know whether he remains part of the Sharks’ plans, whether there is a realistic prospect of his return soon, or whether his future at the franchise is in doubt.

These are reasonable questions, particularly when a player is reportedly fit to play but remains unavailable for match-day selection.

The uncertainty also creates an awkward situation for the franchise. The longer the silence continues, the more room there is for speculation about the relationship between player and team, regardless of what is happening behind closed doors.

The Sharks have a responsibility to their supporters to provide as much clarity as they reasonably can, even if the finer details must remain confidential. There is also a bigger picture to consider, with the Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2027.

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus is constantly assessing his options at hooker as he builds towards the tournament, and South Africa cannot afford to overlook experienced players without understanding their availability and circumstances.

The Boks are not blessed with an endless supply of international-quality hookers. Mbonambi’s continued absence from the field therefore limits Erasmus’s options, particularly when it comes to the depth and experience behind incumbent Malcolm Marx.

Of course, Mbonambi’s Springbok and World Cup prospects will ultimately depend on his form, fitness, availability and the decisions of the national coaching staff. But the longer he remains out of action, the fewer opportunities he has to fight for his place. Erasmus said in August that the 35-year-old needs game time to get back into the national set-up.

That makes clarity about his situation important.

No one is asking to sit in on disciplinary discussions. Supporters simply want to understand whether an important Springbok remains part of the franchise’s plans and whether he will be back on the field soon.
