The Sharks have confirmed that Springbok centre Lukhanyo Am will be leaving the franchise to join Japanese side Mitsubishi Dynaboars, bringing an end to a remarkable chapter that began in 2016.

Am joined the Durban-based side from the Southern Kings and quickly established himself as one of the most composed and intelligent outside centres in world rugby. Renowned for his defensive organisation and calm leadership, he became a cornerstone of the Sharks’ backline and was appointed captain in 2020.

“It’s been an incredible journey,” the Sharks said in a statement on social media. “A leader. A Springbok. A Shark through and through. With over 100 caps to his name, we say thank you to Lukhanyo Am for his years of dedication, leadership, and excellence in the black and white.”

Am’s influence extended far beyond provincial rugby. He was instrumental in the Springboks’ 2019 Rugby World Cup triumph. Although injury saw him miss much of the 2023 World Cup, he was later called up as an injury replacement for Makazole Mapimpi.

This will be Am’s second stint in Japan after spending the 2022 season on loan with the Kobelco Kobe Steelers.

As the Sharks look to the future, young talents Jurenzo Julius and Ethan Hooker are expected to compete for the No 13 jersey – a position Am made his own over the past decade.

“Thank you, Lukhanyo,” the Sharks concluded. “You’ve left an indelible mark on this club.”

With the move to Japan, the 31-year-old will be hoping to reignite his Test career having missed out on Springbok selection during 2025 Rugby Championship campaign and end-of-year tour.
