It would be wrong not to aim for 20 points in their final four games at home, and the Stormers have embraced that mindset as they look to give themselves the best possible chance of qualifying for the United Rugby Championship (URC) playoffs.
Their first big task is facing an injury-depleted Connacht on Saturday at Cape Town Stadium (4pm kick-off).
With the Irish side losing their coach Pete Wilkins ahead of the clash after his resignation, they could be there for the taking.
According to star flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, their goal is five points from each of their next games, beginning with Connacht on Saturday.
“Playing at home again is extremely important for us, and will give us the best possible chance to get 20 points from the four remaining matches,” Feinberg-Mngomezulu said during a press briefing at the Stormers training headquarters in Bellville on Wednesday.
“That is what kind of separates the top from the middle of the table in this competition.
“When you can get five points, you must take the five.
“It would be wrong not to aim for the big prize in five, and if we miss it and get four points, we would still be happy.
“But we want to get as many points from these four fixtures as possible.
“We have built some good momentum (in the URC) since the win against the Bulls in Pretoria.
“Getting five points away from home against the Scarlets was very important. It was our first win overseas since October.
“We shot ourselves in the foot against Ulster, but will take confidence in the points we scored and how we played against them.”
The fact that they also didn’t roll over against Ulster after the red card early in the second half also speaks volumes of their commitment to each other and to fight, the young pivot added.
But, in the same breath, he said they should not have lifted their foot off the accelerator when they started so well in Belfast.
It will be the Stormers’ first home game since January in the Champions Cup, when they annihilated the Sale Sharks 40-0.
And for Feinberg-Mngomezulu and his teammates, there’s a sense of excitement to perform again.
He says playing with the backing of their fans on a surface that they are very used to should aid them in achieving their target of five points.
“In the URC, we have the highest attendance on average, if I am not mistaken, and it speaks volumes how much this (team) means to our city and the Cape,” the 23-year-old Bok playmaker said.
“We are so blessed to have someone like coach John Dobson, who reiterates how important the fans are to us.
“They drive for miles to come and watch us and drive miles back home, regardless of the results. That sticks close to us. It is a real privilege.
“We missed our fans, just as much as they missed us.
“It is time to get some bums off seats and entertain our people.
“We want to give them what they came to watch… they deserve it. I hope we can make them proud on Saturday and the next three weeks.”
