Springbok Women face high-speed style clash against Spain

When the Springbok Women take the pitch at the Estadio La Cartuja on Sunday, they will not merely be looking for back-to-back wins on tour, they will be defending their tactical identity against a side designed to bring chaos to the contest.

Host nation Spain deploy a brand of rugby built on high tempo, rapid recycling, great interplay between forwards and backs, and explosive running through the wide channels – a sevens-style blueprint tailored specifically to drag heavy, set-piece-reliant packs into an exhausting track meet and run their opponents off their feet.

For co-coach Laurian Johannes-Haupt, the matchup is less about relying purely on set-piece dominance and more about testing how far South Africa’s backline evolution has progressed.

“What we have seen from the Spanish team is that they are improving all the time, with a fast, dynamic game that brings their backs into play,” Johannes-Haupt noted.

“They are a newer team, more dynamic and explosive, so we would really like to see how our backline measures up against them.”

The clash presents an acid test for a reconfigured South African back division. With flyhalf Byrhandré Dolf cleared of HIA protocols to steer the ship in the No 10 jersey, alongside veteran scrumhalf Unam Tose, the Springboks possess a playmaker who thrives in open space. Outside her, the inclusion of wings Patience Mokone and Alichia Arries, alongside fullback Jakkie Cilliers, provides South Africa with genuine sevens-honed horsepower of their own.

Rather than attempting to grind the game down into a staccato rhythm of scrums and rolling mauls, the Bok coaching staff want their backline to embrace the expanse while maintaining their set-piece foundation.

“We definitely want to beat them at set-piece time – we want to dominate up front where we excel,” Johannes-Haupt explained.

“However, Spain have developed a solid set piece of their own over time, which is exciting to see. They are going to bring good speed out wide, but we also want our own attacking fleet to step up and showcase what they can do. Their dynamic young backline will test us in every area.”

If Spain represent the ultimate benchmark for fast counters and open-field threat, Sunday’s finale will reveal whether South Africa’s transition towards a complete, multi-dimensional Test outfit is running on schedule.
