Stormers XXIII assistant coach Sentle Lehoko has insisted the squad remain energised and united as they look to put their heartbreak against the Cheetahs behind them and embrace their next Currie Cup challenge against the Pumas in Nelspruit.
Addressing the media following Sunday’s frustrating loss at Athlone Stadium, Lehoko paid tribute to the faithful Cape supporters while stressing that the coaching staff remain proud of the players’ effort and fighting spirit.
“It is very disappointing because we want to do the best we can every weekend,” Lehoko said. “We know how much it means to the people who love and support this team, and to see Athlone Stadium packed was incredible.
“While we are disappointed not to get the result, we are proud of how the guys chased for each other. Monday brought a lot of energy and enthusiasm because we still have great opportunities ahead.”
Attention now turns to Mbombela Stadium for a formidable away fixture against a streetwise Pumas outfit known for their physical forward pack, dangerous kicking game, and lethal driving mauls.
With new rules giving extra power to the rolling maul, Lehoko revealed that their forwards coach Helmut Lehmann has been placing heavy emphasis on neutralising the home side’s set-piece threat.
“The Pumas are an experienced, physical side, especially away from home,” Lehoko noted. “Mauls have gained a lot of traction and power under the new rules, so we know we have to be super prepared for that area of the game.
Our forwards coach Helmut Lehmann is incredible and spends a lot of time making sure we are ready to stop that threat. We know it a big part of their game and how important it’s going to be for us to be locked in and ready to stop their maul threat.
