South Africans should brace for a volatile day of weather on Sunday, April 19, 2026, as widespread thunderstorms, heavy downpours and strong winds impact large parts of the country, while the south-western coastline faces rough seas and damaging coastal conditions.
A Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms has been issued across much of the central and eastern interior, including parts of the Free State, North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
These storms are expected to bring strong, potentially damaging winds, large hail and intense lightning, along with heavy rainfall that could trigger localised flooding, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas. Rain chances in these regions range between 60% and 80%, with the highest likelihood concentrated over the eastern interior.
Disruptive rainfall is also a major concern, with a separate Yellow Level 2 warning highlighting the risk of flooding affecting roads, informal settlements and vulnerable infrastructure.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution as wet and slippery roads, combined with reduced visibility, may lead to hazardous driving conditions and longer travel times.
Further south, the Western Cape and parts of the Northern Cape will experience a different but equally impactful set of conditions.
Rain chances here are lower, generally between 30% and 50%, but strong interior winds under a Yellow Level 1 warning could still cause localised damage and disruptions to power and communication networks.
Along the south-west coast, a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds and waves is in effect. Rough seas and strong coastal winds are expected to disrupt harbour operations and make navigation difficult for small vessels, particularly between Cape Town and surrounding coastal areas.
Overall, Sunday’s weather paints a picture of a country divided between stormy inland conditions and windy, unsettled coastal weather.
Residents are urged to stay alert, monitor updates from the South African Weather Service and take necessary precautions as these conditions unfold.
