She has issued an urgent appeal to parents not to delay speaking to their children about the dangers of sharing images online and the importance of asking for help if they become victims of online predators.
She said many young victims suffer in silence because they fear punishment or disappointing their parents, leaving them vulnerable to criminals who exploit that fear.
Sextortion cases rise: A plea for parents to talk to their children.
According to Sadleir, children should know they are never alone and that support is available.
She encouraged young people to seek help from a trusted adult and reminded them:
“They are always welcome to DM us at The Digital Law Company. If we can help, we will direct them to my website, where there is a blog about the sextortion scam. Follow the tips on there.”
One of the most powerful suggestions she has for families is introducing what she calls a “golden ticket of immunity” – an agreement that children can come forward without fear of blame if they find themselves being blackmailed online.
“What I would like all parents to do is introduce the concept of a golden ticket of immunity into your home.
“If your child is ever being blackmailed or extorted because they sent something they shouldn’t have, and they are now being told that their life will be ruined unless they send more content, follow awful instructions, or send money, Bitcoin, cryptocurrency or betting vouchers to the perpetrator, give them this golden ticket.
“There should be no questions asked if they come to you and say they are being blackmailed. You will help them get out of that pickle,” she said.
For Sadleir, the issue is deeply personal. She said the messages that haunt her most are those sent by terrified children who feel they have nowhere to turn.
“The very worst messages I get are from children in the middle of the night who say, ‘Ma’am, please help me. I can’t let my parents know about this. It’s an absolute disaster.’ Talk to your children today. Don’t put off the conversation.”
Sadleir believes that creating a home where children know they can ask for help without fear of judgement could prevent countless young people from becoming trapped in a cycle of fear, shame and exploitation.
