When KwaZulu-Natal distance star Tayla Kavanagh decided to walk away from the lucrative domestic Spar Grand Prix series after winning the opening two legs in Cape Town and Durban — sacrificing a clear path to the R200,000-plus overall winner’s prize to pursue a racing block in Europe — it was a high-stakes gamble.

Fast-forward to today, and that bold decision has yielded the most successful European campaign by a South African female road runner in modern history.

Her European crusade kicked off with a historic fourth-place finish in the 5km at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, where she clocked 14:51 to break Elana Meyer’s 32-year-old national record (15:10) and missed out on a world bronze medal by just one second.

Two weeks later, the 25-year-old Hollywood Athletics Club star doubled down in the 10km at the Brașov Running Festival in Romania. There, she shattered Glenrose Xaba’s national 10km mark of 31:12 with an astonishing time of 30:50 — becoming the first South African woman in history to dip under the 31-minute barrier on the road.

Her breakthrough road campaign built on a strong foundation laid earlier in the season on the track and road. A major milestone arrived at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where Kavanagh proved her versatility against a stacked international field on the track. Making her Games debut in the 5,000m final, she held her own against world-class opposition to finish eighth, breaking the sub-15-minute barrier on the track for the first time in 14:58.49.

Speaking for the first time since returning home to South Africa, Kavanagh opened up about the single-minded focus behind her European risk.

“This year was always about chasing faster times for me,” Kavanagh explained. “I wanted to see what I could achieve and what was possible when I pushed my limits. I therefore had to plan my races carefully, which sometimes meant making some tough decisions.”

While domestic road races offer guaranteed financial rewards, the fast courses, elite depth, and ideal weather conditions in Europe presented a rare window to elevate her international standing.

“The conditions are much better in Europe for running faster times, so when I got those opportunities I had to take them and see what was possible,” she said. “You never know for sure going into a race what conditions you’ll face on race day. So when you get good conditions, you have to take advantage of that and give it your all.”

Executing her strategy to perfection in Romania, Kavanagh chopped 22 seconds off the previous national benchmark, digging deep over a gruelling final kilometre to secure her second national record in 15 days.

“I’m really so happy with how my season has gone,” she admitted. “To finish off with two good races in Europe and two national records, I’m very proud and just really happy. Having now broken two national records at the end of my season is super special.”

While passing up local prize purses was a difficult financial sacrifice in the short term, Kavanagh knows the career capital gained in Europe far outweighs the potential earnings left behind.

“The times I have managed to achieve this year will give me more opportunities next year,” she noted.

With two national records safely locked away, the Durban athlete is enjoying a well-earned rest before targeting the global stage once more.

“At the moment I’m taking a well-deserved break. It’s been a long year and I need to recharge physically and mentally,” Kavanagh said. “After that, I’ll start to plan for 2027. World Champs is on my radar — if I am able to qualify, it would be a great opportunity and something really exciting.”
