Thobani Nzuza is returning to the stage after a seven-year break, bringing back his award-winning play “Boy Ntulikazi” in a moment that marks both reflection and renewal in his career.
“After seven years on television, I am finally coming back to the stage. Theatre is where it all began for me,” said Nzuza.
He recalled his early journey with clarity, pointing to 2016 and 2017 as defining years.
At just 23, he travelled across the country performing with limited resources but a strong belief in his craft.
“I had no institutional support, no big sponsors, only faith, courage, and people who believed in me when I was still a nobody,” he said.
Those early experiences were shaped by acts of kindness that helped him move forward.
Nzuza remembers how soccer commentator, actor and producer Reggie Mapensela Ndlovu transported him from Park Station to Diepkloof Hall for an audition at the Zabalaza Theatre Festival.
He also credited playwright Menzi Mkhwane, who used social media to rally support for his trip to Cape Town. “Because of that love and support, we went to the festival and won Best Production and Best Actor. Those moments changed my life,” he said.
Now, years later, Nzuza returns with a deeper sense of purpose.
“My love for storytelling is still burning just as strongly. This time I return not only as a performer, but as someone deeply grateful for the journey and the people who made it possible,” he said.
The production, presented by Ubutainment Arts, will run from May 1 to 3, at Seabrooke’s Theatre at Durban High School.
The play, co-written by Nzuza and Kagiso Tshimakwane, has travelled widely and is also studied as a published text.
“This May, I want to celebrate that journey with you. This one is for anyone who has ever believed in a dream.”
