Three young men were shot and killed in Gugulethu on Tuesday night following weeks of mass shootings in the Western Cape.
Police spokesperson Colonel André Traut said the victims, all in their 20s, were attacked at about 6.30pm by unknown gunmen who opened fire before fleeing the scene in the Lotus informal settlement.
“Detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit are investigating the circumstances and pursuing all leads to trace the suspects,” Traut said.
The motive for the attack was not immediately known.
Traut said the investigation was ongoing.
The triple killing adds to a growing list of deadly shootings that have rocked the Cape Flats in recent months.
Western Cape police in August said more than 30 people have been killed in Cape Town over the past two months in a wave of mass shootings.
Authorities believed the attacks were linked to gangs, taxi conflicts, or extortion.
On the evening of June 5, a gang-related shooting in Wallacedene left three men dead.
The following morning, four taxi owners were shot and killed at the Mfuleni taxi rank.
On June 28, eight people were killed in a house in Gugulethu.
On July 4, five more were shot dead in Mitchells Plain in gang-related violence, followed by four deaths in Bishop Lavis on July 4, including an 80-year-old woman.
And less than a month later, shootings in the Overcome Heights and Xakabantu informal settlements in Muizenberg left seven people dead.
