In a significant enforcement operation across the region, traffic officers have reported an alarming spike in unlawful driving behaviours. Over the past week, officers recorded a staggering 49,687 offences for various traffic violations, executed 1,845 warrants, and impounded 239 public transport vehicles. The substantial numbers underscore the urgent need for upholding safety on the roads.
Of the 25 motorists arrested during the operations, 19 were apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol, while six faced charges for serious offences such as driving a stolen vehicle, presenting false documentation, and assaulting an officer. This troubling trend points to an increasing disregard for road safety regulations among some members of the public.
A notable crackdown took place in the Cape Town Central Business District (CBD) on Friday, 25 July 2025, where traffic officers identified 164 transgressions. Alarmingly, 54 of those motorists were unable to provide valid driver’s licences.
“It is quite alarming to realise how many people are driving without valid licences or proof of a valid licence,” said JP Smith, Mayco member for Safety and Security.
“While it may seem of little consequence, the reality is that officers are duty-bound to enforce the law. We face massive challenges with unlicensed drivers who are a danger to themselves and others.”
Smith said it is important to carry your physical driving licences.
“Presentation of that driving licence card is the only way to prove that you are behind the wheel legally. Let this serve as a reminder to us all to never leave home without your physical card as digital copies are not acceptable. If your card has been lost or stolen, keep proof of the new application on hand in case you are stopped.”
In addition to traffic-related arrests, Metro Police officers apprehended 67 suspects this week, including 33 for illegal possession of drugs. Further demonstrating a robust response to public safety, officers issued 2,977 fines while on patrol.
Law Enforcement officials collectively arrested 154 suspects and issued an additional 6,731 notices, highlighting a proactive approach to maintaining order across the city.
The City said the Public Emergency Communication Centre was inundated with calls this weekend, receiving 1,693 incidents, which included 636 medical emergencies, 123 of which were cases of assault. Meanwhile, assistance was dispatched to 41 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents, reaffirming the need for a vigilant public and rapid response capabilities.
