Diego Borella, an assistant director for the popular Netflix series “Emily in Paris“, has died at the age of 47.
Borella’s untimely death occurred on Thursday, August 21, while he was on set, filming the fifth season of the show.
A spokesperson for Paramount Television Studios expressed the company’s grief in a statement:
“We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the ‘Emily in Paris’ production family. Our hearts go out to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
According to online reports, Borella, who was a locally hired third assistant director, collapsed around 7pm, while preparations were underway for a climactic scene at the exquisite Hotel Danieli in Venice.
Immediate attempts were made by medical personnel on set to revive him, but tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Reports suggest that he may have suffered a sudden heart attack.
Following Borella’s death, production on season five was temporarily halted, although it resumed just two days later on Saturday, August 23.
The filming for this new season began in Rome back in May, before moving to Paris and finally stopping in Venice for the concluding scenes.
Netflix had recently given fans a first look at the upcoming season, which is set to premiere on December 18, 2025.
While the details of the new episodes are still under wraps, creator Darren Star expressed excitement about what viewers can expect, saying, “I think we’ve got a really terrific season coming up.”
The fifth season stars well-known actors, including Lily Collins, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu and Ashley Park.
Collins not only takes on the leading role but also serves as a producer for the series.
Meanwhile, Borella had previously worked on the medical drama “DOC – Nelle tue mani” in 2022.
