Durban Metro Police have arrested 32 drivers over the weekend for road traffic offences, including two members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

These arrests were made as part of ongoing high-visibility roadblocks and multidisciplinary operations targeting drunk driving and other traffic violations.

One of the soldiers was arrested for drunk driving, while the other faced charges for assaulting a Metro Police officer and obstructing him from performing his duties.

The arrests occurred on Friday and Saturday, with 15 drivers apprehended on Friday and 17 on Saturday.

The soldiers were processed at the SAPS Wentworth Police Station, said Durban Metro Police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu.

“The first soldier was arrested for drunk driving, while the second was arrested for obstruction of duty and assault on a police officer,” Zungu said.

He also praised the dedication of officers, even in challenging conditions.

“Even in heavy rain, our officers are out in full force, conducting roadblocks and high-visibility patrols across the City.

”If you choose to drink and drive, we will find you and arrest you,” Zungu said.

Zungu warned that operations would intensify throughout the week and over weekends to ensure the safety of all road users.

Looking ahead to the summer holidays, Zungu said: “As we approach the summer holidays, road recklessness tends to increase. We want to assure the public that our officers are prepared and vigilant, and will act decisively against any traffic violations.”

What I did find refreshing however, was his […]
