Standing on the sands of Praia da Rocha Beach in Portugal and experiencing South Africa’s very own Tyla perform was a completely surreal experience.
Global superstar Tyla rocked Afro Nation with an electrifying performance that celebrated her journey and offered a taste of what’s to come.
From the moment Tyla stepped onto the stage, the girl from Edenvale, Johannesburg, commanded attention and had thousands of voices echoing her name and singing back every lyric.
Having seen Tyla perform in South Africa before, there was certainly something different about standing in the crowd among people from all over the world, including Nigeria and the United Kingdom, and hearing them scream and praise her. It was truly a different experience.
Tyla was one of the headlining acts, and in her third appearance at Afro Nation, she delivered a mind-blowing show. Her set was a celebration of her discography, featuring hits such as “Is It,” “Getting Late,” “A.R.T.,” “Safer,” “She Did It Again” and “Jump.”
Tyla’s performance was filled with well-rehearsed choreography that told a story aligned with the music. White pom-poms appeared during “Chanel,” adding another layer to the performance and elevating the moment.
Her dancers delivered a full-on show, supporting her throughout the set. The choreography was perfectly timed and suited each song she performed. You could feel that their energy was completely in sync.
Tyla is gearing up to release her second studio album, APOP*, and is in the middle of a major rollout that has fans eagerly counting down to its release.
She incorporated A*POP throughout the performance, writing the album title on her body in neon green paint and displaying it around the stage to make sure everyone knew which era she was entering.
When she began performing songs from the upcoming album, Tyla even took a moment to write “21 days to A*POP” in neon green paint on a mirror. She also had “APOP” written on her microphone, proving that every detail had been carefully considered.
Every detail mattered. It was evident that, even before stepping onto the stage, Tyla had thought of everything, from her outfit to the body glitter, embodying the true essence of a superstar.
Watching Tyla perform to a crowd of more than 40,000 people from across the globe was a reminder that she is a pop star whose reach extends far beyond South Africa. Seeing a young South African woman command a stage of that magnitude was an affirmation that all dreams are valid.
