United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep concern over reports of xenophobic violence in parts of South Africa, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal. He warned that attacks against migrants and foreign nationals threaten the country’s democratic values and social stability.
According to UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres strongly condemned the recent violence and intimidation targeting migrants and foreign nationals in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.
“The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by reports of xenophobic attacks and acts of harassment and intimidation against migrants and foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, including in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape Province,” Dujarric said.
He further condemned those behind the violence, saying: “These criminal acts [are] perpetrated by individuals inciting violence and exploiting socio-economic conditions.”
Guterres stressed that “violence, vigilantism and all forms of incitement to hatred have no place in an inclusive, democratic society governed by the rule of law and respect for human rights.”
The UN chief also pointed to South Africa’s historical reliance on international solidarity during the anti-apartheid struggle, noting that the country had been shaped by the contributions of people from across Africa and beyond.
“The Secretary-General recalls that South Africa’s struggle against apartheid was sustained through international and African solidarity,” said Dujarric.
He welcomed assurances from South African authorities that those responsible for criminal acts would be investigated and prosecuted, adding that such investigations “must be prompt, thorough, independent and impartial.”
While acknowledging South Africa’s socio-economic pressures and the strain they can place on communities, Guterres said these challenges could not justify unlawful or discriminatory actions against migrants.
“Addressing these concerns must always be conducted lawfully, without discrimination and in a manner that upholds the human rights and dignity of all people.”
The United Nations said it remains ready to support efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions, protecting vulnerable communities, and strengthening social cohesion in South Africa.
“The United Nations stands ready to continue engaging in efforts to de-escalate tensions, counter incitement, protect those at risk and strengthen social cohesion.”
The remarks come amid heightened concern over renewed anti-foreigner sentiment in parts of the country, with government and law enforcement under pressure to prevent further violence and restore calm.
