Police in Malamulele, under the Vhembe District in Limpopo, have launched an intense manhunt for a man accused of brutally killing his five-month-old biological son at Jimmy Jones village on Tuesday morning.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the shocking incident occurred shortly before 8 am when the infant’s mother went to the Malamulele police station to report a case of domestic violence after she was allegedly assaulted by her boyfriend, who is also the child’s father.
“While opening the case, the woman informed police that the suspect had also been assaulting their baby,” said Ledwaba.
“Out of fear for her safety, she fled the house, leaving the child behind with the suspect.”
Police officers immediately accompanied the woman to her home, where they were met with a gruesome scene. The lifeless body of the infant was found lying on the floor with severe injuries to the head and face, indicating he had been brutally assaulted. Emergency medical services were called to the scene and certified the child dead.
Ledwaba said the suspect had already fled by the time police arrived.
“A case of murder has been opened, and our members are working tirelessly to trace and apprehend the perpetrator,” he said.
Meanwhile, provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has condemned the killing, describing it as an unimaginable betrayal of parental responsibility and humanity.
“It is deeply distressing and unacceptable that an innocent life has been lost in such a cruel manner,” Hadebe said.
“We urge community members to come forward with any information that can help our investigators locate and arrest the suspect so that justice can take its course.”
Police have appealed to anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts to contact Detective Sergeant Mpho Mbooi on 081 559 9546, the Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or any nearest police station. Information may also be shared anonymously through the My SAPS App.
