Fresh government data shows that President Trump’s changes to refugee policy have significantly altered both the number of people admitted into the US and the countries they hail from.

President Trump’s overhaul of US refugee policy has significantly changed both the number of people admitted to the country and where they come from, according to the latest government data.

From October 2025 to March 2026, 4,499 refugees have been resettled in the United States, the Refugee Processing Center reports, with all but three of them (Afghans) hailing from South Africa.

By comparison, during the final full fiscal year of Joe Biden’s administration, just over 100,000 refugees were admitted.

Last year, Trump suspended all refugee admissions (including those from war zones), but made an exception for Afrikaners—a white minority South African group—he said faced persecution.

The South African government strenuously rejects this characterisation.
