Uzalo actress Gugu Gumede is celebrating a major health milestone, marking two years since undergoing gastric sleeve surgery.

She is best known for her portrayal of MaMlambo on the SABC 1 soapie “Uzalo”, where her character is a popular spiritual advisor and prophetess. MaMlambo is deeply involved in local gossip and is known for her loud-mouthed personality. Although Gumede previously left the show for maternity and to join “Umjolo; The Gone Girl”, she has since returned to “Uzalo”.

Gumede took to Instagram to mark the occasion, expressing gratitude for her improved health and for trusting her own decision, despite online commentary about her weight.

“I cannot believe it has officially been two years since having my gastric sleeve surgery! I took a chance on myself, and it paid off – I’m so proud! Cheers to @hermesclinics for walking with me on this journey; but mostly, cheers to me!” she wrote in the caption.

Throughout her acting career, particularly during her time on “Uzalo”, Gumede frequently faced criticism regarding her appearance. She was often remarked upon for looking older than her actual age, leading to her being cast in roles, such as playing an elder, with actors who were her peers.

The Uzalo actress made a personal, independent decision to focus on her health and lose weight, motivated by a desire to better care for herself.

However, her weight loss journey faced criticism from people who claimed she looked too skinny, despite not having asked for their advice. They also criticised her for losing weight now. She has waited for two years now; however, despite posting little, she has reached a milestone in her weight-loss journey.

The actress is currently celebrating her decision to prioritise her own well-being. She shared her pride on Instagram, writing: “Man! I’m so proud of myself, cheers to me! Cheers to me for believing that there was a better me out there, a better version of myself out there, a healthy version of myself out there and I went ahead with becoming that.” She further emphasised her commitment to motherhood, adding, “Cheers to me for wanting to be the best mom that I can be.”
