Award-winning actor Viola Davis has stepped into fiction with the release of her debut adult novel, “Judge Stone”, written with bestselling author James Patterson.
The courtroom drama follows a respected Black female judge who must navigate a legal case that divides her community and tests her own sense of justice.
Set in Union Springs, Alabama, the novel centres on Judge Mary Stone, a woman known for her commitment to both the law and her family farm.
Stone’s life shifts when she is assigned the most controversial case the region has ever seen.
A doctor is charged under strict abortion laws after performing a procedure on a 13-year-old girl. As the trial unfolds, the judge must balance the letter of the law with the expectations of voters as she faces reelection.
The story explores questions of justice, power and personal conscience. Judge Stone finds herself under pressure from political leaders, members of her community and her own beliefs as she weighs the consequences of every decision in court.
Davis stated that her own life experiences played a role in shaping the characters in the novel. She also reflected on how her childhood continues to guide her creative work.
“There aren’t words to describe this feeling. From writing the first draft to holding it now for the first time, I am so grateful,” Davis said. “I can’t wait for you to read this, from my heart to yours.”
She added that the greatest reward in her life has not been the recognition that she has received in her career but the ability to stay connected to her younger self.
“My greatest blessing is not the awards. It is that I have kept 6-year-old Viola alive and I continue to honour the girl I once was.”
Sharing the news on Instagram, Davis wrote: “I am beyond proud to see this story come to life. It is so important now more than ever.”
Patterson said the collaboration was built on a simple goal.
“Viola and I had one objective when writing this book. Keep making it better. It was just the two of us, writer to writer. No agents, no studio, just two people with a mission,” he said.
Although “Judge Stone” marks Davis’ first adult fiction novel, she previously released her memoir “Finding Me” in 2022.
The book went on to earn her a Grammy-award for Best Spoken Word Album and completed her Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony (EGOT) status.
