Western Cape police arrest over 55,000 suspects in fight against violent crime

Western Cape police have made significant strides in tackling serious and violent crime, arresting more than 55,000 suspects and confiscating hundreds of illegal weapons between April and August 2025.

According to provincial crime statistics, 679 suspects were arrested for murder, most of which are believed to be gang-related, while 684 suspects were nabbed for attempted murder, also largely linked to gang activity.

In a statement released by the South African Police Services, 65 people were killed within two weeks. National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Lieutenant-General Sehlahle Fannie Masemola, says that through Operation Lockdown, they are ensuring more boots on the ground and prioritizing grassroots policing where crime is reported daily.

On Friday morning, national police said that since 1 April 2025, more than 51,000 suspects were arrested in the Western Cape alone, seizing 842 firearms and 9,000 dangerous weapons.

“Just in the last two weeks, 37 gangsters were taken in for questioning, with 10 arrested and already appearing before court,” says Masemola

The dangerous weapons recovered by the police included knives and knobkerries.

“Most recently, the swift arrest of two suspects linked to the attack on three Members of Parliament is evidence of our commitment to act decisively and swiftly against those who threaten the safety of the citizens of this country.”

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Atlenda Mathe said the Western Cape is one of the priority provinces when it comes to resources and capacity because of the challenges of serious and violent crime.

“We always deploy more police officers here to assist in fighting gang violence,” says Mathe

She continued to say that the confiscations and arrests reflect the province’s intensified focus on dismantling criminal networks and restoring safety in communities.

Police have urged residents to continue reporting suspicious activity and to support community policing initiatives aimed at curbing violence and improving safety.
