Learners from various schools across the metro stepped out of the classroom and into action this winter, teaming up for a lifesaving cause. They took part in the Week of Warriors campaign, a youth-driven initiative by the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS).
Ten of the Western Cape’s top blood-donating schools joined forces to attract 1,000 blood donors in just one week. The campaign comes at a critical time, as blood stocks traditionally dip during winter due to flu season, exam stress, and colder weather.
“We believe in the power of youth to lead, and these 10 schools are proof of what’s possible when young people unite for a purpose bigger than themselves,” said Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. “They’re not just showing up they’re setting the standard for schools across the province.”
The participating schools included Fairmont High, Protea Heights Academy, Westerford High, The Settlers High School, Spine Road High, Edgemead High, Livingstone High, Apex High, DF Malan, and Worcester Gymnasium.
Each school hosted an on-site blood donation clinic during the campaign week. While these clinics were for learners only, WCBS encouraged communities to support the initiative and continue donating at clinics and centres throughout the Western Cape.
With the rallying cry “Let’s Unite to Save Lives,” the campaign reminded everyone that every donation counts. “Every learner who donates is giving someone else a chance at life,” added Carli. “They’re not just warriors for the week they’re changemakers for the future.”
